Comfort Art Hotel Siru

Yes, this area of town was formerly decrepit -- it used to be a red-light district and still has some peep-show joints and offbeat appliance stores -- but it has been going upmarket fast since a slew of fancy office blocks were constructed nearby. What sets the fascinating midsize Siru apart is that the owner persuaded 130 Belgian artists, including some of the country's biggest names, to "decorate" each of the coolly modern, well-equipped rooms and the corridors with a work on travel. The Siru is best summed up as an art gallery-cum-hotel in a redeveloped business district. Given the unpredictable nature of reactions to modern art, some clients apparently reserve the same room time after time; others ask for a room change in the middle of the night. It is not easily forgotten. The tony French/Belgian Brasserie Saint-Germain next door is the "unofficial" hotel restaurant.
