One of the country's most important theaters, the architecture here puts on a show all its own. Built in Spanish Habsburg Imperial style, it overlooks Plaza Lavalle, only 2 blocks from the more famous Teatro Colón. The building was a gift from two Spanish actors who opened the theater in 1921. Within a few years, it went bankrupt and was taken over by the Argentine government. The interior is decorated with materials from Spain, including tapestries from Madrid and tiles from Valencia and Tarragona. The theater is open to the public for tours and has productions throughout the year, so ask when visiting about upcoming shows.
