Frommer's Review

Located in the center of the upscale Recoleta district, the Alvear Palace is the most exclusive hotel in Buenos Aires and one of the top hotels in the world. It is the only privately owned luxury hotel in Buenos Aires. A gilded classical confection full of marble and bronze, the Alvear combines Empire- and Louis XV-style furniture with exquisite French decorative arts. The illustrious guest list has included Antonio Banderas, Donatella Versace, the emperor of Japan, and Robert Duvall, to name a few. Recently renovated guest rooms combine luxurious comforts, such as chandeliers, Egyptian cotton linens, and silk drapes, with modern conveniences. All bathrooms were also renovated, with marble, Hermès toiletries, and TV screens added to the bathtubs (some are Jacuzzis) for over-the-top indulgence. All rooms come with personal butler service, cellphones that can be activated on demand, fresh flowers and fruit baskets, and daily newspaper delivery. The formal hotel provides sharp, professional service, and the excellent concierge staff goes to great lengths to accommodate guest requests. If it is your dream to stay here while in Buenos Aires, the website sometimes offers discounts when occupancy is low. The Alvear Palace is home to one of the best restaurants in South America (La Bourgogne) and also offers an excellent, if expensive, Sunday brunch and afternoon tea in L'Orangerie. Kosher catering and dining is also available at the Alvear. The Alvear also recently opened the 800-sq.-m (8,611-sq.ft.) La Prairie spa. It is one of the largest and most luxurious spas in all of Buenos Aires, with lymphatic treatments and hydrotherapy among the specialties. In 2008 and 2009, the Alvear will expand its brand name by building two luxury business hotel properties-one in Puerto Madero and one in the Microcentro.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
