Alvear Palace Hotel Review

Among the world's top hotels, this gilded classical confection of marble and bronze combines Empire- and Louis XV-style furniture with exquisite French decorative arts. Past guests include Antonio Banderas, Donatella Versace, the emperor of Japan, and Robert Duvall. Modern conveniences are combined with luxurious comforts such as chandeliers, Egyptian cotton linens, and silk drapes. All rooms come with personal butler service, cellphones that can be activated on demand, fresh flowers and fruit baskets, and daily newspaper delivery. Large marble bathrooms contain Hermès toiletries, and most have Jacuzzi tubs. The formal hotel provides sharp, professional service, and the concierges go to great lengths to accommodate guests' requests. The Alvear Palace is home to one of South America's best French restaurants, La Bourgogne and offers an excellent, expensive Sunday brunch and afternoon tea in L'Orangerie. Kosher dining is also available.

Facilities:
2 restaurants; bar; private butler service; concierge; small health club; massage; room service; spa

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
