Visitor Information -- The Tourist Information Bureau (tel. 0747/244-3697; Mon-Sat 10am-5pm, closed second Sat of the month and Sun) is located at Circuit House, but the owners of the Haveli Braj Bhushanjee heritage hotel are a mine of information, supplying you with maps, arranging transport, and ready with advice on anything from how much to pay for a rickshaw to opening hours.
Getting There -- Kota is 130km (81 miles) by road from Sawai Madhopur and 155km (96 miles) from Chittaurgarh, so you can either visit it after you see Ranthambhore and/or Jaipur or combine it with a trip from Udaipur via Chittaurgarh. To get to Bundi, you have to travel through the industrialized town of Kota. If you have arrived by train (Kota is well connected to the rest of the state, including the main Delhi-to-Mumbai line, Jaipur, Sawai Madhopur, and Chittaurgarh), you will then have to catch a bus, jeep, or taxi to Bundi. A taxi to Bundi will run you Rs 650 ($16/£8); a jeep costs Rs 550 ($14/£7). Kota, which dates back to the 12th century, has a number of impressive monuments (particularly the Palace Fort), but it is only worth stopping at if you have arrived too late to catch a taxi to Bundi. If this is the case, recommended overnight options are Brijraj Bhawan Palace (tel. 0744/245-0529; Rs 2,950/$72/£36 double); and Welcomgroup's Umed Bhawan Palace (tel. 0744/232-5262; www.welcomheritagehotels.com), where doubles start at $70 (£35).
Getting Around -- You can get around the town on foot with ease. Should you tire, auto-rickshaws traverse the narrow lanes. If you book into Haveli Braj Bhushanjee, the proprietor will arrange all your transport at very reasonable prices -- yet another reason the hotel is so highly recommended. Expect to pay around Rs 1,200 ($29/£15) for an air-conditioned taxi for the day.
