This is the town's pride and joy, the only National Historic Landmark in eastern Colorado, and a must-see for everyone who stops in Burlington. Carved in 1905 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company for Denver's Elitch Gardens, and one of the few wooden carousels left in America that still wears its original coat of paint, it's fully restored and operational. The 46 stationary animals -- mostly horses, but also giraffes, zebras, camels, a hippocampus (sea horse), a lion, a tiger, and others -- march counterclockwise around three tiers of oil paintings, representing the lifestyles and interests of the American Victorian middle class. A Wurlitzer Monster Military Band Organ, one of only two of its size and vintage in operation today, provides the music, and a terrific new museum opened in 2007 to provide fascinating historic context.
