Planning a Trip

Getting There

Trains leave regularly from either Liverpool Street Station or Kings Cross Station in London; however, none are direct. Leaving from Liverpool Street, you will change at Ipswich. And from Kings Cross Station, you'll have to switch trains at Cambridge. The trip takes approximately 1 1/2 hours. National Express runs several direct buses every day from London's Victoria Coach Station, which reach Bury in 2 hours. For schedules and information, call tel. 0871/781-81-81 or visit www.nationalexpress.com.

By car, take the M11 north out of London. As you near Cambridge, get on the A45 and continue on to Bury. The drive takes about 1 1/2 hours.

It's also possible to get here by train or bus from Cambridge. Regular trains leave from the Cambridge Rail Station and arrive about 45 minutes later in Bury St. Edmunds. Stagecoach Bus Company runs five buses a day to Bury from the Drummer Street Bus Station in Cambridge; it's a 1-hour ride. Call tel. 01223/423578 for information and schedules. By car from Cambridge, simply take the A45 directly. It's a 45-minute drive.

Visitor Information

The Bury St. Edmunds Tourist Information Centre, 6 Angel Hill (tel. 01284/763233; www.stedmundsbury.gov.uk), is open November to Easter, Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm and Saturday 10am to 1pm; and from Easter to October, Monday to Saturday 9:30am to 5:30pm, Sunday 10am to 3pm.

Special Events

The Bury St. Edmunds Festival (tel. 01284/757630; www.buryfestival.co.uk) is held annually in May. The 17-day festival includes performances from leading ensembles and soloists ranging from classical to contemporary. Exhibitions, talks, walks, films, plays, and a fireworks display are integral parts of this internationally renowned festival.
