Frommer's Review
This is the ultimate eco-sensitive boutique hotel, perfect for those who enjoy a return to nature and an abandonment of the comforts that some travelers wouldn't want to do without. Located between Cabarete and Sosúa, the hotel occupies the site that was conceived as the owner's (a Chilean expatriate named Lole Sumar) private home. In 1990, she opted to improve her acreage with a series of artfully rustic wood and concrete structures for the shelter and amusement of like-minded new-age friends. Some are mushroom-shaped organic-looking structures, others are more functional structures of wood clapboards and thick beams. Regardless of the shelter you select, you'll get a sense of living on a sunny, not particularly stressful summer camp for adults and their children. None of the units has air conditioning, a TV, or telephone, but there are yoga classes conducted without charge for residents twice a week. Don't come here looking for upscale flair and urban style, since you really won't find it. Instead, you have an almost defiant sense that people are in Cabarete to get their lives back in order, read quietly in the sun, often in hammocks, and communicate with the great outdoors.
Meals cost RD$420-RD$860 (US$13-US$26/£6.30-£13) and are likely to include creole-style braised octopus; langoustines with mushroom sauce; grilled tuna steak with pistachio; and dorado with coconut. The on-site spa is new age-centered, small-scale, and personalized.
