Calgary's relatively compact center belies its actual size, which stretches out for miles in every direction. Despite its population of 1 million, its footprint is among the largest in North America -- bigger than Toronto, Canada's biggest city with more than double its population. As such, it can be a difficult place to negotiate without a car. The C-Train is an excellent link north to south, running right down the middle of the city in the south, along Macleod Trail, before cutting west through downtown and continuing north. Still, Calgary is a driver's city, and if you hope to see much outside the city's core prepare to spend some time behind the wheel.
