Frommer's Review
If you have one meal in Calgary, it should be here. To reach the aptly named River Café, it takes a short walk through the Eau Claire Market area, then over the footbridge to lovely Prince's Island Park in the Bow River. On a lovely summer evening, the walk is a plus, as are the restaurant's lovely park-side decks (no vehicles hurtling by). Wood-fired, free-range, and wild-gathered foods teamed with organic whole breads and fresh-baked desserts form the backbone of the excellent menu. There's a wide range of appetizers and light dishes -- many vegetarian -- as well as pizza-like flat breads topped with zippy cheese, vegetables, and fruit. Specialties from the grill include braised pheasant breast with mustard spaetzle, black cherry oil, and roasted apple. Menus change seasonally and read like a very tasty adventure novel.
