Gone are the days -- for the most part, anyway -- when the gay community in ultra-conservative Calgary had to socialize in relative seclusion. Twisted Element calls itself "the largest gay club west of Montreal" -- a tall claim, given the large-scale clubs in Vancouver -- but it mostly lives up to it. The bar, in the city's northwest, not far from Kensington or the University of Calgary, features a cocktail lounge in the basement and a jam-packed dance club on the main floor.
