Hotel Portofino Kulm Review

This grand old hotel slung in a skyscraping hammock of greenery in the midst of the Tigullio’s parkland halfway between Camogli and Rapallo/Santa Margherita Ligure was opened in 1908 but for decades stood derelict until Camogli’s Cenobio dei Dogi overhauled it to reopen in 2000. The long vistas sweep across the forest down to the Riviera north of the promontory toward Genoa in one direction, and in the other south over Santa Margherita Ligure down the coast toward the Cinque Terre. Many balconies and rooftop terraces take full advantage of the panoramas. The modest-size, carpeted rooms come with wrought-iron bedsteads, stylish furnishings, marble bathrooms, and queen-size beds. The best ones come with those sea views from balconies. The hotel hosts lots of conventions during the week, turning to a tourism-based clientele on the weekends. Four rooms are in a separate structure a smidgen higher up the driveway, with even better views.

Facilities:
International/Ligurian restaurant; bar; babysitting; bikes; concierge; tiny exercise room; Jacuzzi; indoor heated pool; room service; sauna

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
