There are any number of ways to go about exploring all that Campania has to offer. Public transportation in the region is good, so you can easily move about from one destination to the other by train or bus. Exploring the countryside, though, will require a car, which you can rent in any city or large town for just the time you need it -- with the rocketing car theft rates in Campania (and the parking woes in the coastal towns), having a car is more a liability than a commodity. Another possibility is renting a car with a driver, an increasingly popular option, particularly for exploring the Sorrento peninsula and the famous Amalfi Drive.
While Naples is usually your port of entry to the region -- it is the largest city, and is served by an international airport and harbor -- we recommend you keep your exploration of this bustling city for last: Naples can be overwhelming, literally bursting with life and noise, and you'll appreciate it a lot more if you ease yourself slowly into this special cultural universe by starting your visit in smaller towns. Plus, with so much to see in Naples, you might never get to explore the rest of the region.
