Planning a TripGetting There By Plane -- TAM (tel. 067/383-0206), Varig (tel. 067/368-6174), and Gol (tel. 0300/789-2121) service Campo Grande from Rio and São Paulo. Campo Grande's airport is 7km (4 1/4 miles) west of downtown on Avenida Duque de Caxias (tel. 067/368-6093). A taxi to downtown (the best option) costs about R$25 (US$11). By Bus -- The bus station in Campo Grande is at Rua Dom Aquino and Rua Joaquim Nabuco (tel. 067/3383-1678), just a block from the main avenue, Afonso Pena. Buses connect Campo Grande to Cuiabá (approximately 10 hr.), Bonito (5 hr.), and Corumbá (7 hr.). Visitor Information The main tourist information office is on Av. Noroeste 5140, at the corner of Avenida Afonso Pena (tel. 067/324-5830). It's open Tuesday through Saturday from 8am to 7pm and Sunday from 9am to noon. It's got great maps, excellent brochures, and contacts for Pantanal lodges and Bonito packages. City Layout Campo Grande's downtown is fairly compact and easy to navigate. BR-262, which runs into town from the airport, becomes Avenida Duque de Caxias close to town and then Avenida Afonso Pena, the city's main boulevard. The downtown core of Campo Grande is concentrated around Avenida Afonso Pena and the cross streets of Avenida Calógeras and Rua 14 de Junho. The city's main ceremonial square -- Praça de República -- and only worthwhile museum are located 4 blocks north of downtown on Avenida Afonso Pena. Getting Around By Bus -- Downtown Campo Grande is pretty compact, and most shopping and restaurants can be accessed on foot or by a very inexpensive taxi ride. The only useful bus route goes along Avenida Afonso Pena to some of the restaurants and the mall. Any bus reading VIA SHOPPING CAMPO GRANDE will serve. By Taxi -- Taxis can be hailed on the street, or by calling Coopertaxi (tel. 067/3361-1111). You'll likely only use them to get back and forth from the airport (R$18-R$25/US$7.50-US$11) or to get to the mall or restaurants farther along Avenida Afonso Pena (R$7-R$12/US$3-US$5).
