Fazenda Rio Negro Review

This fazenda is part of a 7,700-hectare (19,000-acre) private nature reserve owned by the Washington, D.C.-based NGO Conservation International (www.conservationinternational.org). There are scientific researchers at the lodge, and guests are occasionally allowed to tag along with their activities, but the main attraction here remains the incredibly rich Pantanal wildlife. The range of activities includes hiking, horseback riding, and canoeing in the Rio Negro, as well as jeep and wildlife watching trips. The lodge is in a classic old Pantanal-style ranch house, with vast dining rooms and spacious verandas. The main house itself has two VIP suites and two other rooms. The standard rooms are in a second guesthouse about 100m (328 feet) away. All are comfortable but nothing fancy. Guests usually stay for 3 days. The program of activities normally evolves as follows: Day 1: hiking and boat trip; Day 2: jeep safari and horseback riding; Day 3: canoeing and a night safari. However, the schedule is flexible. The only way into the ranch is by plane. The lodge quotes the following rates, but guests are welcome to shop around. Better rates may well be available. Van to/from Aquidauana, then three-passenger plane to/from the lodge: R$3,100 (US$1,550/£837).

Facilities:
Bar; horses; canoes; laundry

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
