The Chalet of Canandaigua ReviewOrdinarily, I wouldn't find myself seduced by a log cabin, but this extraordinary luxury B&B is leagues removed from expectations of a rustic, Adirondack-style cabin. It is secluded, tucked at the end of a long approach past a pond of ducks and tall trees, and technically it is constructed of logs. But it's as if the Four Seasons hotel chain decided to do a three-room inn as an alpine cottage. It's a luxury lodge, where the rustic elements of this unique 1960s abode combine with inviting furnishings, high-tech features, and stunning attention to detail. The two innkeepers, Pattie and Margaret, have turned the notion of frumpy B&B on its head. The accommodations are almost impossibly large and enveloping, with fireplaces and top-of-the-line bathrooms, with massive claw-foot soaking tubs, showers with multiple rain heads, and heated towel racks. You could probably argue for hours over your favorite room, but for me it's the peak-ceilinged Balcony Suite. Then, there's the expansive deck; the savvy, open-minded owners; and those three-course gourmet breakfasts (bananas Foster? Belgian waffles? Kiss the waistline goodbye!). Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
