The most exciting thing to happen on this coast in decades is the development of two adjoined world-class golf courses in Inverness. If you play, you’ll be in golfer’s heaven; if you don’t, you’ll still be pleased with the way these courses have transformed Inverness from one of the most run-down towns in the region to a trendy little place with new amenities for travelers, including unrivaled restaurants and accommodations at the golf courses. It’s impossible to miss the courses when driving through town on Route 19—they sweep down from the road over what was once a coal mine slag heap and plateau at the shore. Cabot Links is edged by the small harbor where fishing boats are docked and ends at a gorgeous sand beach backed by grassy dunes where townsfolk gather to hang out at the beach or stroll the boardwalk. Cabot Cliffs stops short of the sea where, you guessed it, the beach gives way to shoreline cliffs. Every hole has an ocean view. Both are built to echo the world’s first courses where the game began in Scotland. As a true links golf course, it’s said to be the only one in Canada. Both Golf Digest and Golf Magazine placed it in the world’s top 100 courses upon opening in 2012. Canada Golf Magazine named it the country’s top course. Cabot links opened in 2016; it will surely gather similar accolades.
