Frommer's Review
It's been rated as one of the top-10 hotel restaurants in the world, and The Cape Colony remains the grandest venue in Cape Town: the perfect place to celebrate a wedding anniversary or special birthday. Its wonderfully plush ambience is the result of the discreet yet attentive service, and old-fashioned decor -- right down to the individual table lamps that create soft pools of light on the impeccable table appointments. Food is very good, from both a flavor and presentation point of view. The menu changes regularly, but new executive chef Ian Mancais has separated it into two sections: Asian contemporary and classical. Recommended signature dishes from both include the Vietnamese black-lacquered lamb, and beef Wellington with foie gras in puff pastry. Diners are entertained by live classical or jazz music, though regrettably "modern romance" tracks have crept into the repertoire, undermining the gracious dignity of the room.

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
