Initially a side project for the couple who started neighboring Bukhara (still Cape Town's top North Indian restaurant), chic Haiku is where Capetonians will try to sidestep the waiting lists in order to impress out-of-town visitors. The concept -- which favors dim sum, grilled and wok-fried Chinese, and tapas-style Japanese sushi and grills -- has spawned a branch in London (with a more diverse menu). Locally, it still attracts foodies and society bigwigs, though not so many since the arrival of Nobu and Maze. Multiple kitchens work on different sections of the menu, so dishes arrive in dribs and drabs, making it a bit of a culinary adventure -- the cool crowd keeps things interesting as you eat one moment, and then ogle other diners as you wait for your next dish. Sushi's good, but you'd best sample the eclectic range of Asian tapas that allows you to sample myriad flavors -- bank on around three to five per person, and share (and pray someone else is picking up the bill). You'll probably need help choosing from your server, and you may have to put up with a stroppy tone when the place gets packed, but on good nights, things run smoothly enough.
