Frommer's Review
The worst thing about staying here is how difficult it is to leave -- the "Nellie," as she's affectionately known, is a 10-minute stroll through the Company Gardens to the center of the city, yet the great pink ship is adrift in 3.6 hectares (9 acres) of mature gardens that offer all the tranquility of the country. Service standards are unparalleled, and rooms (particularly those in the Hof Villa, the main hotel building, and the sublime garden cottages around the adults' pool) are elegant and soothing. Having opened her doors in 1899 to accommodate the passengers of the Union and Castle lines, the undisputed grande dame of colonial hotels became a little fusty over the years, but with some clever refurbishing (by Cape-based designer Graham Viney, who has a real flair for sophisticated old-world charm) and the opening of the slinky Planet bar, the likes of Colin Farrell and Nicolas Cage now mingle with nouveau riche ladies in large hats and doddering aristocrats in cardigans. A massive breakfast buffet and light meals are served in the newly redecorated Oasis restaurant, overlooking the large pool and gardens. The elegant Cape Colony restaurant offers a more formal dining experience in a wonderful old-fashioned atmosphere. Even if you don't opt to stay here, make sure you set aside an afternoon to experience the Nellie's legendary high tea (R135/$19/£10 per person). Tip: While this is deservedly a firm favorite, also take a look at Ellerman House, the seaside alternative.
