Cape Grace Review

Of the larger Waterfront hotels, the Grace remains the most elegant, and it's still the first choice for visiting VIPs, though Dock House is by far the most exclusive. The difference between this hotel and the Mount Nelson -- the other top choice -- is primarily one of location; the Cape Grace is on a busy marina, surrounded by apartments and the nearby V&A mall, while the Nellie is surrounded by lush, tranquil gardens at the edge of the city center. The entire hotel has been given an updated look, and in some ways the new Grace resembles a sexy museum (with polished artifacts and antiques, glass display boxes, and quirky experimental chandeliers). Bedrooms remain impeccable, all dressed up in locally printed textiles and tasteful finery. Rooms are smaller than at the more modern One&Only, across the marina, but they're truly luxurious, with French doors opening onto mountain or harbor views. It's child friendly, too -- kids are welcomed with gift baskets, stories read aloud, and milk before bedtime, and the hotel rents such gear as car seats and prams.

Facilities:
Restaurant; bar; babysitting; concierge; library; pool; room service; spa

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
