Part of the Constantia Wine Route, the aptly named Constantia Uitsig (uitsig means "view") has commanding vistas of the surrounding vineyards and mountains, and there's a calm sense of rural peace on this working wine farm. Even so, it's the food that draws people here: The farm boasts three tip-top restaurants, of which Uitsig and La Colombe are regularly ranked by foodies in their top-10 Cape restaurants (though it's worth noting that La Colombe lost its award-winning chef in 2007). Having dined well, it's wonderful to simply roll back to one of the 16 well-appointed suites dotted in the butterfly- and bird-filled gardens, the Cape Dutch architecture echoing that of the 17th-century manor house. Uitsig's lawns extend onto a cricket oval -- with its unimpeded view of the mountains and distant sea, and its attractive Victorian pavilion, it's a popular destination for players and enthusiasts from around the world.

Note: If you're not planning a gourmet holiday, or you're a keen golfer, check out the newly refurbished Steenberg Country Hotel (tel. 021/713-2222; www.steenberghotel.com), also in Constantia. Located on a beautifully restored 17th-century wine farm, with an 18-hole championship golf course thrown in for good measure, Steenberg has better room decor than Uitsig, and with rates starting at R2,750 ($389/£196) double (less in winter), is set to give Constantia Uitsig a run for its money.
