Frommer's Review
This luxury hotel probably has the most impressive facilities in town, although it's in a somewhat sketchy neighborhood. The rooms, amenities, and general ambience here are all top-notch. The lobby is opulent and grand, with marble floors, massive Persian rugs, and plenty of gold trim and varnished wood accents. The rooms are large and modern, and feature a high-tech all-in-one bedside control panel for lights, television, air-conditioning, and alarm clock. There are bidets in every bathroom, and all of the tubs feature Jacuzzi jets. The upper five floors house the executive-level rooms, with private check-in and checkout service, rotating complimentary buffets, butler service, and other perks. There's a modern commercial mall just next door, and while the open-air pedestrian mall of Sabana Grande is just a block or so away, it's become increasingly unsafe for visitors. The spa here is one of the best in the city. The Gran Meliá also has an additional 236 one- and two-bedroom apartments for longer stays.
