Hotel Avila Review

The aged grande dame of Caracas hotels, this place is worth considering. Built by Nelson Rockefeller in 1942, the hotel is a quiet oasis located on the outskirts of downtown on the flanks of Mount Avila. The lush grounds and flowering gardens are a welcome change from the cold concrete and glass that characterize most of Caracas. The hotel definitely shows its age, and perennially feels as if it could use some major maintenance and upkeep. Yet, it retains a certain dignity and charm, if not glamour. Most of the rooms are spacious, with high ceilings, carpeting, and rattan furnishings, although most do not have air-conditioning. The suites are a mixed bag: Some are quite attractive, while others are less appealing than the standard rooms. The Tower and Executive suites are the best rooms in the house. A taxi from the hotel to downtown will cost you BsF20 to BsF25.

Facilities:
Restaurant; bar; lounge; concierge; small health club; small outdoor pool; room service; 6 lighted tennis courts

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
