Shopping

Carcassonne has two distinct shopping areas. In the modern lower city, the major streets for shopping, particularly for clothing, are rue Clemenceau and rue de Verdun. In the walled medieval city, the streets are chock-full of tiny stores and boutiques; most sell gift items such as antiques and local arts and crafts.

Stores worth visiting, all in the Cité, include Comptoir des Vins, 3 rue du Comte Roge (tel. 04-68-26-44-76), where you'll find a wide selection of regional wines ranging from simple table wines to those awarded the distinction of Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée. Some antiques stores of merit are Mme Faye-Nunez, 4 place du Château (tel. 04-68-47-09-45), for antique furniture; Antiquités Safi, 26 rue Trivalle (tel. 04-68-25-60-51), for paintings and art objects; and Dominique Sarraute, 15 porte d'Aude (tel. 04-68-47-10-06), for antique firearms.
