Frommer's Review
About 1.6km (1 mile) north of the center in a busy suburb, this popular restaurant occupies a 19th-century stone core and is known for its unpretentious and nutritious food. The kitchen hires skilled chefs whose suppliers offer the best in Welsh produce and meats. The cooks are strong on their "taste of Wales" dishes, as exemplified by such delights as deep-fried laverballs (seaweed balls) coated in sunflower and sesame seeds. Starters are divvied up among "Land," "Sea," and "Earth" platters, each comprising five miniature appetizers. One Land appetizer, for example, features smoked Monmouthshire chicken with avocado and ham crisps. Among the best-prepared mains are skate wing with a cockle-and-leek sauce, or else loin of pork chop with wild mushrooms. Brecon lamb appears with a rosemary cake and spring greens.
