Fly-Fishing Lodges on the Carretera Austral

Anglers around the world consider Patagonia to be one of the last great regions for fly-fishing, especially now that fishing clubs, lodges, and private individuals have bought up stretches of some the best rivers in the U.S., strictly limiting access to some of the sweetest spots for casting a line. Some of the highest trout-yielding rivers in Patagonia see only a few dozen or so fly-fishermen per year, and, therefore, angling fanatics, some of Hollywood's biggest stars, and many international bigwigs (such as ex-president George H. W. Bush, Michael Douglas, Robert Redford, and Harrison Ford) pay a visit here to escape the crowds and be at one with nature.

The reviewed entries is a guide to the best lodges from Puerto Montt to Coyhaique. They aren't cheap; most run from $250 to $600 (£167-£400) per night per person, all-inclusive (nonfishing spouses sometimes pay less, and some offer "father-son" deals, so ask before booking). Typically, they cater to few guests -- around 12 at most -- though larger hotels also tend to offer fly-fishing excursions. All of the reviewed accommodations rate three Frommer's stars (our highest ranking) for their one-of-a-kind location, direct access to prize streams and lakes, service, and friendliness.
