Planning a Trip

Getting There

By Plane -- Most visitors traveling by air will probably fly into one of the three major airports in the New York City area. For information on those, see chapter 5. Other visitors traveling by air will arrive via Albany International Airport, 737 Albany-Shaker Rd. (tel. 518/242-2299; www.albanyairport.com), or Stewart International Airport, Route 207, New Windsor (tel. 845/564-2100; www.stewartintlairport.com), near Newburgh, which handles 50 daily flights from major U.S. cities such as Atlanta, Chicago, Philadelphia, Raleigh/Durham, and Washington, D.C.

By Car -- Most visitors tour the Catskill Mountain region by private automobile. The region begins about 90 miles, or about 2 hours, north of New York City; there is easy access via exits 16 through 21B of the New York State Thruway (I-87). From the south, Route I-81 and Route 17 (future I-86) also provide direct access. From New England, I-84 and I-90 connect with I-88, I-87, and Route 17 (future I-86).

Major car-rental companies, including Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, National, and Thrifty, have representatives at all the major airports.

By Train -- Amtrak will get you as close as Poughkeepsie, Schenectady, Albany, or Syracuse. For more information and reservations, contact Amtrak at tel. 800/USA-RAIL or visit www.amtrak.com.

By Bus -- Greyhound (tel. 800/231-2222; www.greyhound.com) travels to Andes, Arkville, Bearsville, Catskill, Fleischmanns, Hensonville, Kerhonkson, Liberty, Livingston Manor, Monticello, Mountainville, New Paltz, Phoenicia, Rock Hill, Roscoe, Tannersville, Windham, and Woodstock, among other towns. Adirondack, New York & Pine Hill Trailways (tel. 800/776-7548; www.trailwaysny.com) serves most of the Catskill region, including New Paltz, Woodstock, Phoenicia, Margaretville, Andes, Windham, Hunter, Cairo, Saugerties, Catskill, and more.
