Getting There & Around

Route 60 is the main artery of the central Westfjords. The distance from Bíldudalur to Ísafjörður, the Westfjords capital, is 145km (90 miles), and the road is now paved all the way. Thanks to a long, three-pronged tunnel built in 1996, Ísafjörður is only 25 minutes from Suðureyri, 20 minutes from Flateyri, and 45 minutes from Þingeyri.

Two airports with scheduled flights from Reykjavík are just outside the central Westfjords; to the south is Bíldudalur, and to the north is Ísafjörður.

From June through August, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, Westfjords dentures (tel. 456-5006; www.westfjordsadventures.is) runs a bus from Ísafjörður to Látrabjarg peninsula and back (9,500kr one way), with ferry connections to Snæfellsnes peninsula at Brjánslækur; in addition to scheduled stops along the way, a pickup and dropoff along Route 60 can usually be arranged informally.

F&S Hópferðabílar (tel. 893-1058) operates the municipal buses that connect Ísafjörður to Suðureyri, Flateyri, and Þingeyri on weekdays year-round. The schedule is posted at www.isafjordur.is/ferdamadurinn/samgongur in Icelandic only, but you shouldn't have trouble figuring it out. One-way fares are 280kr, and buses leave Ísafjörður from the N1 gas station on Pollgata, behind Hótel Ísafjörður.

Visitor Information

The tourist information office in Ísafjörður covers the entire Westfjords, though most towns have an ad hoc information kiosk, such as at service stations, museums, or guesthouses. In Þingeyri an information center is at Hafnarstræti 6 (tel. 456-8304; umthingeyri@snerpa.is; June-Aug Mon-Fri 10am-6pm, Sat-Sun 11am-6pm; Sept-May Thurs 3-6pm). Suðureyri has no tourist office, but all visitor activities are outlined at www.sudureyri.is/online.html.
