The Barbecue Joint

With its "pig-kitsch" decor, this eatery serves up some of the best barbecue in Chapel Hill. Two Carolina boys (even adult men are called "boys" in the South), Jonathan Childres and Damon Lapas, have teamed up to create this family favorite where mama, papa, and all the kids show up for a good tuck-in. First, the barbecue itself: It has a mellow, smoky taste; it's moist and served in "fist-size" knots of unadulterated pulled pork, with Asian chili sauce resting on the table for extra flavor. Barbecue isn't all you get here. The appetizers are the most imaginative of any so-called barbecue joint in town, including smoked duck quesadillas with roasted chipotle sauce; or the hummus, black bean, and pumpkin-seed dip with homemade tortilla chips. Other main-course delights include grilled wahoo with mango chutney, and a classic Cajun jambalaya, a meal in itself. Few can resist such desserts as the bourbon chocolate pecan pie or the caramelized pecan banana cake.
