Frommer's Review
The Fearrington House will tug at your heart . . . and your purse, but you won't be disappointed. This isn't the kind of place that lends itself to children, so leave the kids at home. Created in 1974 in a planned community of gracious town houses surrounding a village center, the 60-acre grounds are meticulously kept, with the rose gardens adding a special burst of color. The guest rooms are just as inviting, with lots of little details: silk or dried flowers, antiques mixed with high-quality reproductions, double ottomans, cathedral ceilings, some seating areas, marble tables, various bed arrangements, and luxuriously appointed bathrooms. Some nice extras at the inn include screened porches, vintage Schwinns ready for your ride around the village, and even fresh flowers in the bathroom.
The restaurant is in a separate white clapboard building with elegant decor, ranging from sunny French country to Laura Ashley styles. Little alcoves make dining an intimate experience. The food is expertly prepared and served. Anticipate such dishes as sautéed soft-shell crayfish in orange Creole butter, or baked striped bass with salmon mousse and citron-infused fumet (a concentrated stock). Between courses, you can cleanse your palate with buttermilk sorbet. Another, more traditional restaurant is also available.
