Frommer's Review
This is a media favorite, having been consistently voted as one of the most outstanding B&Bs in the country by everybody from the Travel Channel to Travel & Leisure magazine. Now operated by the third-generation owner, the house was built in 1848 by John Ravenel, whose son designed the Little David, the first semi-submersible vessel and the forerunner to the submarine.
In operation as a B&B since 1977, Palmer Home is beautifully decorated and furnished with antiques dating back 200 years. Guest rooms are midsize to spacious and open onto panoramic views of Charleston Harbor and historic Fort Sumter. Many of the bedrooms contain four-posters. The most elegant -- also the most expensive -- way to stay here is to rent the on-site carriage house.
