Wintergreen Resort Review

About 43 miles southwest of Charlottesville, this 11,000-acre recreational real estate development offers year-round vacation activities in a Blue Ridge Mountain setting. The big draws include skiing, golf (the short, narrow fairways of Devils Knob course follow the cool summit of a 4,000-ft.-high mountain), horseback riding, mountain biking, swimming in the lake, canoeing, and an adventure center with rock climbing, skateboarding, wintertime snow tubing, and other activities. Wintergreen also has a Nature Foundation that offers guided hikes, seminars, and camps for children. There's music in the cool air, too, as Wintergreen Performing Arts, Inc. (tel. 434/325-8292; www.wintergreenperformingarts.org) turns a ski slope into an amphitheater for the Wintergreen Summer Music Festival in July and weekend concerts throughout the summer.

The resort's focal point is the tastefully lodgelike Inn, which has a huge gristmill wheel occupying the two-story registration area. Most accommodations are in small enclaves scattered throughout the property, but there are also three- to seven-bedroom homes, one- to four-bedroom condos, and studios and lodge rooms. Since the homes and condos are privately owned, furnishings are highly individual, ranging from country quaint to sleek and sophisticated. Each condo is appointed with a modern kitchen, living area, bathroom for each bedroom, and balcony or patio (the mountain views are superb); most have working fireplaces.

Facilities:
5 restaurants; 3 bars; babysitting; bikes; children's center or programs; concierge (winter only); 3 golf courses; health club; Jacuzzi; 5 pools (1 indoor); room service; sauna; 24 tennis courts

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
