Clifton Review

You'll think you've arrived at Tara from Gone With the Wind when you see this stately manse, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. Thomas Mann Randolph, husband of Thomas Jefferson's daughter, Martha, built it in 1799, originally as a trading post. Although neither as physically grand nor as well equipped as Keswick Hall at Monticello, this is a more intimate retreat.

The Restaurant at Clifton is among the best dining options in the Charlottesville area, providing an international a la carte menu that lives up to the inn's Relais & Château affiliation. Groups can reserve the big table for 24 in the excellent basement wine cellar.

Guest rooms and suites upstairs in the mansion are comfortable, but for more privacy and charm, opt for the estate's whitewashed stables, old carriage house, and Randolph's law office, which have been converted into romantic outposts. The split-level carriage house sports a grand piano and Jacuzzi, while the honeymoon cottage has a glass-walled bathroom.

Facilities:
Restaurant; bar; outdoor pool; room service; tennis court

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
