Getting There -- From Easton and other points south, take Route 301 northeast to Route 213, which leads into Chesapeake City. From Baltimore, take I-95 to the Elkton exit (Rte. 279); follow Route 213 south. Or sail into town via the canal.

Visitor Information -- For brochures, contact the Cecil County Tourism Office, 1 Seahawk Dr., North East (tel. 800/232-4595 or 410/996-6292; www.seececil.org).

Getting Around -- Although downtown Chesapeake City lends itself to walking, the best way to see the surrounding sights is by car. There is also a free seasonal passenger ferry service, operated by the Miss Clare, connecting the north and south sides of the canal. It runs Wednesday through Sunday in summer, weekends only in spring and fall. The schedule is posted on a kiosk in Pell Gardens.

Orientation -- The C&D Canal divides the city into north and south sides. The main commercial and historic area is on the south side of the canal. South Chesapeake City is pedestrian-friendly; its one main street, Bohemia Avenue, has stores and businesses. Look for free walking and shopping brochures in any shop. Free parking areas under the bridge and farther in town are clearly marked.
