For years, there was a moratorium on high-rise building in and around the Old City. Then someone slipped in this 12-story eyesore on the edge of the historic, two-story Old City. The chain-hotel style rooms have no distinguishing features, other than their good size and cleanliness. Having said that, from rooms on its upper floors, Amora Tapae offers great vistas of the Old City and the mountains beyond, and there is a small pool. The place attracts lots of luxury lager louts for its proximity to the beer bars near Thapae gate, and a festive air prevails (that means late-night hall hooting), so bring those earplugs. If you are visiting Chiang Mai during Songkran (the Apr water festival), this is the perfect location for all the aquatic mayhem that takes place next to the moat.
