Frommer's Review
Like Italian? Like surprises? Then you'll enjoy Osteria Via Stato's "Italian Dinner Party" menu: A set price of $36 buys you a full, European-style meal, including a range of antipasto plates (which could be anything from house-cured olives to braised veal meatballs), two pasta dishes (served family style), and a meat entree (the only dish you actually choose from the menu). Pastas are usually a mix of hearty and light; pappardelle with free-range chicken ragu might be served alongside gemelli with sage and brown butter. Entrees include halibut Milanese with lemon-herb breadcrumbs; braised pork shank with white beans and bacon; and chicken Mario, a simple chicken breast perfectly seared with butter and olive oil. They'll bring you unlimited helpings of everything except the entrees, so come with an appetite. (If you're not up for a gut-busting meal, you can also order off an a la carte menu.)
To keep things simple with drinks, ask for the "Just Bring Me Wine" program, which matches a glass of wine to each course at three different price levels (the most affordable level, $15, is a great deal). Twosomes tend to be seated at communal tables in the dining room, so ask for a private table if you value your privacy. The lunch menu includes salads and panini.
