You won't find fine dining here, but you will be served seafood fresh from the boat. The famous Chincoteague oysters are harvested September to March. The area is also known for flounder, caught year-round.
You will have many dining options here during summer, especially family-style restaurants, but most are seasonal operations and close October until Easter weekend the following spring. The two locally owned restaurants below are consistently good and are open except during January and February.
Also open year-round are the venerable Bill's Seafood Restaurant, 4040 Main St. (tel. 757/336-5831), which opens daily at 5am to feed breakfast to the watermen headed to work, and Don's Seafood Restaurant and Chattie's Lounge, 4113 Main St. (tel. 747/336-5715), which opens daily at 7am. Don's upstairs Chattie's Lounge has live or DJ music on weekend nights.
Best Breakfast in Chincoteague
The best breakfast place in town is the Island Cafe, a cottage in front of the Island Motor Inn, 4391 Main St. (tel. 757/336-3141). The big front porch is ideal for enjoying the chef's specialty, French toast laced with Grand Marnier, Amaretto, and Bailey's Irish Cream. Open daily 6:30 to 11am.
