Fashion has been an important Ibiza industry since the late 1960s, when a nonconformist fashion philosophy took hold, combining elements of the traditional pitiusa (peasant dress) attire of the natives and the natural, free-flowing garments of the hippies who flocked here in the 1960s. In recent years Ibizan designs have become much more sophisticated and complex, but the individualistic spirit has not wavered.
At the corner of Conde Rosselón, master artisan Pedro Planells creates hand-sewn, original leather goods at Pedro's, Carrer Aníbal 8 (tel. 97-131-30-26). Many items can be custom-made. Pedro creates stylish accessories and home furnishings in leather and silver. Well-heeled clients have included everyone from international celebrities to King Juan Carlos. Pedro's keeps conventional Spanish hours, but during the off season, his hours and days vary.
Sandal Shop, Plaça de Vila 2 (tel. 97-130-54-75), sells high-quality leather goods made by a cast of local artisans. One-of-a-kind accessories, including bejeweled belts and leather bags, are designed for individual clients. Custom-made sandals can be created to suit personal fashion tastes.
