The River Clyde meanders north to Glasgow from its inland headwaters in the southern uplands of Scotland. The Clyde Valley is best known locally for its garden nurseries and their sometimes quaint tea shops. The main town is Lanark, 44km (27 miles) from Glasgow. Trains leave Glasgow Central Station twice an hour, and the trip takes about an hour. Standard same-day round-trip fare is around £10. By car, take the M74 freeway southeast from Glasgow and exit at signs for Lanark at Kirkmuirhill or via the more scenic route through the Clyde Valley on the A72.
