Frommer's Review
The most romantic place to stay in the area is this restored baroque castle constructed 300 years ago at a point 14km (9 miles) from Cologne. Crowning a hill, it offers panoramic views of the city. This is life on a grand scale, fit for a German prince -- indeed, it was a prince, Jan Wellem, who built the castle in the first place.
After lavish renovations, it has been successfully transformed and elegantly furnished with all the modern amenities. Rooms vary in size -- after all, this is a castle -- but all of them are handsomely equipped with such extras as three phones. Our favorite is no. 307 with its panorama of Cologne and its black marble bathroom with Jacuzzi. All of the accommodations come with modern tub/shower combos. The atmosphere is more intimate and friendly than some drafty castle might suggest. It features special grace notes such as a collection of 10,000 wines in the cellar, a state-of-the-art spa, and 66,000 lights around the pool imitating a night sky.
Even if you're not a guest, consider a reservation for lunch or dinner. Your choices are the Vendôme, run by three-star Michelin chef Joachim Wissler, with a formal French cuisine; the Enoteca, a rustic Italian bistro with freshly made pasta; or Jan Wellem, with its finely honed international cuisine.
