Meliá Panama Canal ReviewThe Meliá is housed in the old quarters of the Escuela de las Americas, the notorious military school that spawned Manuel Noriega. For the most part, people spend their time poolside, but there are kayaks for paddling around, a canopy-style zip line, day excursions offered to Portobelo and Fort San Lorenzo, and a fairly empty casino -- but not much more. The soaring lobby is staffed by attentive, friendly personnel, and decorated with Spanish colonial art reproductions. The rooms have king-size beds and marble bathrooms, and suites are very spacious, with a marginally frumpy, classic decor. The hotel is centered around two fabulous, resort-style pools, with a swim-up bar, lounge chairs, and an activity center. The resort sells packages that include meals, but do a price comparison because their nightly rate (which includes breakfast) coupled with ordering meals a la carte can be substantially cheaper. Also, skip the Duty Free Trade Zone shopping tour, which is overrated. Facilities: Note: This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice. Please be sure to confirm all rates and details directly with the companies in question before planning your trip.

| 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
