Frommer's Review
Anglers cast lines from the dock while gulls and ducks hang around hoping for a discarded tidbit. Steamboat service was fully operational here in 1823, and the existing dock dates from 1879. Designated a National Historic Site, the museum proper features model ships, marine paintings, and artifacts that relate the story of shipbuilding in the valley, which began in 1733 and helped make this a center of world trade far into the 19th century. A replica of America's first submarine (1775), the Turtle, is also on display. The museum usually has walking-tour maps of Essex, too, making this a good first stop on your visit.
A small cruise boat, the River Quest (tel. 860/662-0577; www.ctriverexpeditions.com), makes 90-minute trips during the day in the warmer months ($20 adults, $15 children; includes museum admission), as well as sunset cruises ($25 adults and children over 12; no children under 12 allowed; includes museum admission). In February and March, it offers eagle-sighting cruises ($40 all passengers; includes museum admission).
