Resort hotels have existed at this location where the Connecticut River meets the ocean since the late 19th century, and they've gotten the formula down pat at the current facility. It has one of the largest marinas along the coast, an ingratiating restaurant with a clubby bar and a summer dining terrace, a fully equipped fitness room, and a spa offering a full range of body and skin-care services, including mud and seaweed wraps. Bedrooms are spacious, all with wet bars and sitting areas, some with working fireplaces, whirlpool tubs, and balconies.

The Terra Mar grill offers definitive versions of clam chowder and lobster roll not to be missed. Sunday buffet brunch is especially popular.
