Cashel House Hotel Review

About 20 minutes outside Clifden in the tiny seaside town of Cashel, this lovely, old-fashioned hotel is a virtual haven of peace. The same family has owned and run the place for years -- the older staff will happily recount their memories of when General Charles de Gaulle came to stay in the 1960s. The owner is personally responsible for the magical gardens that surround the low, wide-windowed building. Bedrooms are large, with separate seating areas and picture windows. The king-size beds are firm, and the bathrooms modern. The floral motif is carried from the gardens through to the wallpaper, curtains, and bedding, but it's all tastefully done. Dinner in the big dining room is excellent Continental cuisine, but you will pay (€60 per person) for the privilege of trying it (beware if staff members offer you anything -- tea, for example -- as nothing comes free and it will all appear on your bill in the end). There's plenty to keep you busy here -- a private beach, tennis courts, fishing areas, stables with riding lessons and trekking, and signposted walking paths, but it's still a quiet, mature place for quiet, mature people.

Facilities:
Restaurant; bar; smoke-free rooms; tennis court; library; private beach

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
