Renvyle House Review

This grand old house sits on the wild Atlantic shoreline. It was purchased in 1917 by Oliver St. John Gogarty, the famed Irish poet, wit, surgeon, and politician, who fondly called this secluded seascape and mountain setting "the world's end." That's putting it mildly: It really is off the beaten track, about 10 minutes' drive from the Connemara National Park -- not ideal for a quick overnight, but perfect for a stay of a few days or longer. Many have found it worth the trek. W. B. Yeats honeymooned here, and Churchill was a frequent guest. Today it retains a turn-of-the-20th-century ambience, particularly in its public areas. Guest rooms vary in size and decor, from grand rooms with balconies to cozy attic rooms with dormer windows. Along with sporting amenities, it hosts event weekends, including murder-mystery weekends, fly-fishing clinics, and painting weekends.

Facilities:
Restaurant; bar; 9-hole golf course; outdoor pool; 2 tennis courts; boating; horseback riding

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
