Zetland Country House Hotel Review

This fine fishing lodge in Cashel, about 20 minutes' drive from Clifden, is another good option for anglers. The unusual building was constructed in 1856 as a sporting lodge for a wealthy family. The guest rooms, many of which look out onto the bay, are decorated with antique and reproduction furniture and neutral fabrics. However, the place could do with a facelift, and some may find the whole effect more stuffy and old fashioned than charmingly retro. The restaurant is good, if a little pricey (€60 for four courses). Seafood is a speciality, and vegetables and fruit come from the inn's own gardens. The view from the dining room is spectacular. The Zetland owns the Gowla Fishery, a private sea-trout fishery with 14 lakes and 6.5km (4 miles) of river, so if you don't catch anything here, you'll have some explaining to do.

Facilities:
Tennis court; billiards room; croquet

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
