This Irish country hideaway looks almost too good to be real—a vine-covered 18th-century country house dwarfed by mountains on a 1,000-acre lakefront estate. Calling this place a “lodge” isn’t just cute nomenclature; this is very much an actual hunting lodge, and a veritable paradise for fishermen. Everything is arranged to make fishing easy—boats, ghillies (guides, though of course you fisherfolk knew that), and licenses are all taken care of. If you don’t fish, you can just enjoy the utterly splendid countryside, spending the day hiking the enormous grounds, where filling your lungs with the fresh, loamy air is like a balm for the soul. Afterward, relax by the fire in the cozy library with a sherry from the honor bar, or try your hand at a game in the snooker bar. Guest rooms are comfortable and generously proportioned (though note that the doors don’t have locks). The pricier rooms have views of the lake. The excellent dinners here are an event, eaten at a long dining table to encourage conversation. Pride of place on the menu, of course, goes to fish.
