With a limited supply of rooms and tons of visitors in the summertime, even hotels of dubious quality jack up their rates to near the level of some of the inns in the "expensive" category. In other words, you're better off paying $20 more per night and getting accommodations you can count on. One chain in the city limits is the Best Western, 50 Commons Dr. (tel. 607/547-7100). In Oneonta, 25 miles away, you'll find a Holiday Inn, 5206 State Hwy. 23 (tel. 607/433-2250).

Cooperstown Shadow Brook Campground, 2149 County Hwy. 31 (tel. 607/264-8431), has a pool, playground, stocked fishing pond, and theme weekends and is great for families. Glimmerglass State Park, 1527 County Hwy. 31 (tel. 607/547-8662), 8 miles outside of Cooperstown, overlooks Lake Otsego.
