Frommer's Review
This fine lagoonside resort compensates for Mother Nature's having robbed its beach of most of the sand with one of the most attractive swimming pools in Fiji. You can still go kayaking, spy boarding (riding facedown on a board with a plastic window for fish-viewing), and snorkeling at high tide, but the gorgeous pool is the center of attention here. In a way, the Outrigger is two hotels in one. A majority of the accommodations are hotel rooms in five-story hillside buildings at the rear of the property. They all have balconies, with spectacular views from the upper floor units. In a coconut grove down by the lagoon, a stand of thatched-roof guest bungalows and restaurants resembles a traditional Fijian village. Hotel rooms in the Reef Wing, a three-story lagoonside building (and the last remnant of the Reef Resort which once stood here), are smaller than their hillside counterparts and better suited to couples than families. You'll have butler service down in the comfortable guest bures, which have masi-lined peaked ceilings. The beachfront bungalows are the pick of the litter. A few others are joined as family units. Australian restaurateur Geoff Shaw, who owns both this resort and Castaway Island Resort, sees to it that everyone is well-fed in an intimate fine-dining restaurant, a large open-air, buffet-style dining room, and a midday restaurant by the pool. The wedding chapel here sits high on a hill with a stunning lagoon and sea view.
