Frommer's Review
A favorite haunt of Hollywood stars (it was built by Australian movie producer Henry Crawford, who has since sold it), this super-luxe resort resides beside a gorgeous, 1km (1/2 mile)-long beach of brilliantly white sand. In a blend of Santa Fe and Fijian native architectural styles, the bures and main building have thick adobe walls supporting Fijian thatch roofs. Most meals here are dinner parties inside the main building or on the adjacent patio. You can dine anytime and anyplace you want, however, including in your bure, down in the cool wine cellar, out on the beach, or in The Folly, a cabana that sits all by itself on a headland at one end of the beach. During the day you can take a picnic lunch out on a tiny nearby islet known for good reason as "Nookie Island." Although staff members play guitars and sing island songs, the nightly dinner parties are the entertainment at Vatulele, and they can go into the wee hours. Seemingly vast distances and thick native forest separate the spacious bures, which a previous manager described as being "orgasm distance" apart. Most of these are L-shaped and have a lounge and raised sleeping areas under one roof; another roof covers an enormous bathroom that can be entered both from the bed/dressing area and from a private, hammock-swung patio. At the far end of the property, the private, exquisitely designed Pink House delights honeymooners with its own private beach, plunge pool, and a unique two-person, face-to-face tub in the middle of its large bathroom. The Hollywood types often opt for the terrific views from The Point, a 2-story villa with a private pool sitting on a headland. You'll have free use of an array of non-motorized watersports equipment and pay extra only for scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, and massage.
